Join the University of Arizona to celebrate their newest building, which will house the UA Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research. Visit the building on Saturday for the public open house from 10 AM to 4 PM.

The Laboratory was housed for the past 75 years in Arizona Stadium. The rooms filled the west side of the stadium with office and laboratory doors leading into the hallway where bathrooms and concession stands were located for use during games and events.

The new Bryant Bannister Tree-Ring Building opens this year to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the UA Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research.

Science done at the lab is known as dendrochronology, the study of the annual rings of trees. It was at the University of Arizona where the study of tree rings was invented by Andrew E. Douglass. In the early 1900s, he used tree rings to date cliff dwellings found across the Southwest.

Dendrochronology is still used in archeology but the science can also be used to learn more about weather and climate patterns over the course of hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of years.

The Saturday open house is family-friendly with activities for children, plus guided tours of the new building. Faculty and students will be on-hand to talk about tree-ring research going on at the University of Arizona.
