A new state auditor general's report says statewide classroom spending percentage has hit a 12-year low, with just over 54 percent of operating dollars going for teacher pay and other instructional costs last school year.
That is about 7 percent lower than the national average.
Per-pupil spending was down for the third year.
Locally, Tanque Verde, Vail, Amphitheater and Marana districts are above or at the state average for percentage of funding that actually makes it to the classroom.
Sahuarita, Flowing Wells, Tucson and Sunnyside all fall below the statewide average.
