Federal cuts will affect job-seekers

TUCSON, AZ (TNN) – The job search continues for Megan Harford.  But she said that getting a job in avionics, which is working on electrical hardware in aircraft, would be even more difficult without Pima County One Stop.

"Had Pima One Stop not been able to help me with a textbook or two, a class or two, I would have had to forgo an entire year program," she said as she looked for jobs online.

"We're looking to help them get readjusted and get back on track to find a job," said Charles Casey, administrative manager of Pima County One Stop.

Pima County One Stop is still figuring out the specifics of its five percent cut as a result of the widespread reduction in federal spending.  But the program expects to offer 150 fewer people help with job training.  Casey said that is a small amount, but it is a cut that will still be felt.

"Those people that are already being sponsored by us, they will not be impacted.  What it's going to do, it's going to make it just a little more competitive for those that are coming in in the future.  There's just going to be less money to go around to help people get into training," he said.

"It makes me nervous," Harford said.  "I don't understand.  If we have a spending problem, I don't understand why it gets taken out on a resource like this."

And One Stop also expects to help about 100 fewer youth this summer finding summer employment.  The program froze a few open positions in anticipation of the cuts.  More specific effects will be determined by next week.
