Firefighters battle carport fire on Tucson's south side

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A fire destroyed a vehicle, heavily damaged a carport and displaced two residents Saturday night on the south side.

Tucson Fire arrived in the 6800 Block of 5th Avenue around 8:25 p.m. and found the carport fully involved, Capt. Barrett Baker said.

A storage area behind the carport also was damaged, Baker said.

Firefighters are investigating the cause.

There's no estimate on damages.

The residents will be staying with relatives, Baker said.

    The Fire Chief Joseph De Wolf with Sonoita-Elgin Fire District said the rain was a relief but not a reason to relax, as fire season starts to heat up in southern Arizona. He said conditions are monitored daily because they could change just as quickly.
