TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
A deputy warden at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Tucson says the prison was fully staffed when approximately 400 inmates started fighting in the Whetstone unit.
Daniella Stemple is the deputy warden of the Whetstone unit where the fight happened. She says 152 staff members responded to the incident.
"Whenever there's an incident at one of the units, they have to send additional staff. That's where the 152 staff members responded. We had TSU from Florence, Safford, and Douglas, and our SSU which are our investigators," says Stemple.
TSU is the Tactical Support Unit and SSU is the Special Security Unit.
Stemple says the Whetstone unit has 17 staff members during day and swing shifts and 13 staff members during a graveyard shift. She says there were no staffing issues when the fight broke out.
Two staff members suffered minor injuries during the fight Saturday morning. A total of 15 out of the 17 inmates sent to the hospital for treatment are back in the prison today.
