Vote on Tucson City Golf

Posted: Updated:

Tonight the Tucson City Council and Mayor voted to enterprise Tucson City Golf. According to the city, an enterprise is a business operation that the city runs and is predominately self supporting with fees.

Since 1968 Tucson City Golf has been functioning as an enterprise. A yes vote would make it official. That would make golf report to Mayor and Council annually and give more financial specifics. "It just really reiterates the policy that Mayor and Council would really like the golf course self sustaining," said Kelly Gottschalk assistant city manager.

At the end of the 2012 Fiscal Year, golf had a more than $7 million defect to the general fund. "For 13 years golf is still very close to breaking even, but when you add the capitol and the debt service, that's the defect were having," said Mike Hayes from Tucson City Golf. The official enterprise would allow the Mayor and Council to look at the financial statements and see where golf could make a profit. Under this ordinance, if golf loses money, they would get a loan from the general fund. Like in years past. If golf makes a profit, it would got to a fund to payback the defect and pay for other golf course cost.

Tucson City Golf operates 5 course throughout the city. Golf has been reporting financial information, but the city wants more specifics.
