Weather 101: What is a comet?

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A comet is a remnant from the formation of stars and planets billions of years ago.

It is made of ice and rocks.

As the comet is hurled toward the sun by gravitational forces, its ice is vaporized. That forms the tail of the comet.

The tail always points AWAY from the sun, not necessarily in the opposite direction of its movement through the solar system.

Stay with the KOLD/KMSB team of scientists as Comet Pan-STARRS becomes visible!
