Eight dogs, four puppies killed in Canton house fire

CANTON, OH (WOIO) -

Twelve dogs were killed in a Canton house fire.

The family tells 19 Action News eight dogs and four puppies died in the 6th Street SW house fire.

Crews arrived at the scene at 10 p.m. Wednesday. According to the chief, the flames were so intense the firefighters had to wait before going inside.

"I pulled up and saw my house engulfed in flames and all my dogs are gone," cried Tonya Hinchcliff.

Tonya Hinchcliff owns the home, a home she shared with a dozen dogs, 4 of them puppies. She wept as she showed us pictures on her laptop.

She is saddened but kept her perspective.

"It could been me in the house, it could of been my family," said Hinchcliff.

Many neighbors have dogs, so there is a kind of community grief.

"Yes I have dogs and that was so sad. I about cried when I seen that house on fire its so sad with those dogs," said a neighbor.

"They were just, they were all I had," added Hinchcliff.

Officials say the house is completely destroyed, and several parts of the structure collapsed.

The fire is still under investigation.

You would think the time on the front lines got the best of Louis Mirabelli. He has spent a week fighting the Sawmill Fire, since the first 911 call came in southeast of Green Valley on Sunday, April 23, around noon. Since then, he's been sleeping in tents, under the smoky stars, with a regimented three square meals a day.
