TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
University of Arizona Police say there's no particular rhyme or reason behind the recent spike in campus crime.
In the greater scheme of things, the number of crimes per capita here is actually quite low.
Still, with this many people in one place, things do happen.
They've just been happening a little more frequently as of late.
It all started Feb. 17 when a woman was nearly abducted on the west campus.
It happened around 9 that morning, as the woman was walking alone near North Third Avenue and East Second Street.
A middle-aged white man with graying dark hair and a scruffy-looking beard reportedly picked the woman up and attempted to drag her into an alley before she managed to get away.
On Feb. 28, a UA employee was mugged inside Highland parking garage.
The suspect, a dark-skinned male in his mid to late 20s, is still outstanding.
Finally, on March 2, a UA student was reportedly sexually assaulted by a man who followed her into a bathroom in the Theta Chi fraternity house.
The woman was able to get away before the suspect could remove his clothes.
But it's yet another case of a UA student or faculty member who recently found herself in harm's way.
"You want to be aware so that if someone is following you or watching you, wanting to commit a crime, they're less likely to approach you because you're aware of your surroundings," says UA Police officer Joe Bermudez. "They're looking for someone who's oblivious to what's happening around them."
Each of these crimes remains unsolved.
If you have any information about these cases or possible suspects, you're asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
