TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Commuters on Interstate 19 saw a lot of smoke to the east as they traveled toward Sahuarita and Green Valley.

Remnants of a planned burn sent up a large column of smoke near Old Nogales Highway and Nogales Highway, Green Valley Fire District Battalion Chief Joey Kosiorowski said.

It began burning at 4:15 p.m. in shells left over from cracking pecans.

The fire was on land owned by the Green Valley Pecan Company (Farmers Investment Company).

The company worked to control the fire, which has been exacerbated by wind, the chief said.

Wind was gusting up to 50 mph in the area.
