SIERRA VISTA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
No more warnings. Starting Monday, people in Sierra Vista will get tickets if their picture is snapped by a traffic cam.
The cameras at State Route 92 and Avenida Cochise in Sierra Vista will take your picture and you will get a ticket in the mail.
"The intersection at Avenida Cochise and 92 has been the scene of some very bad accidents," said Barbara Jackson. "I know people do get going awful fast down there."
The city of Sierra Vista says on average, 13 people run red lights and about 16 speed through the intersection each day.
Some residents worry the new cameras will cause an accident. "You get nervous and slam on your brakes because it's all new and everything," said Rita Collins.
Janet Van Wormer says the best way to make sure you have enough time to cross is by watching the "Walk" and "Don't Walk" signal.
"If it's blinking, you know you still have time but it's a little less," said VanWormer. "If it's a solid sign you know you should start slowing down."
"This will be the second functioning red light camera in the city. Plans are in the works to install another one at State Route 90 and Martin Luther King Junior Parkway.
Red light tickets cost $135 and speeding tickets start at $233.
