TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
A Santa Cruz County Sheriff's deputy is "very, very, very lucky" to be alive after rolling his SUV, responding to an emergency call Saturday.
Deputy Jorge Ainza was walking around Monday despite suffering a concussion and fracturing a vertebrae, Sheriff Tony Estrada told Tucson News Now.
The six-year veteran deputy was extracted from his vehicle on Ruby Road just past the railroad tracks. He was airlifted to a Tucson hospital.
Rio Rico Fire rescue personnel cut off the SUV's roof and needed 40 minutes to remove him from the SUV, Estrada said.
Ainza was on his way to a residence on Paseo Mascota, with his lights and siren activated, when he hit the railroad tracks and rolled.
The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
Ainza was released later Saturday from the hospital to the care of his personal physician, Estrada said.
