Pima Men's Hoops in search of new coach

Tucson, AZ (KOLD) - Gabe Van Guse is out as the head men's basketball coach at Pima Community College.

In two seasons, Van Guse led the Aztec to a 10-49 overall record going 3-39 in ACCAC play.

In a statement, Pima Athletic Director Edgar Soto wrote: 

"After two years we felt it was no longer a good fit for our program and department so we decided not to renew his contract."

Position Summary

The Head Coach - Men's Basketball reports to the Executive Director of Athletics and is responsible for performing the duties of Men's Head Basketball Coach for student athletes participating on College sponsored intercollegiate athletic teams and supporting the mission of Pima Community College Athletics.


The mission of the athletic program is to reinforce the attitudes, values, and overall mission of the College: to promote lifelong learning, integrity, leadership, tolerance, good citizenship, diversity, and academic excellence in concert with developing the student-athlete's physical skills and abilities.


This is a part-time (working approximately 19.75 hours per week), 8-month position paying $2,000 per month.

Continued employment is dependent on funding from designated sources. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recruit (within the state of Arizona), select, train, and coordinate student athletes
  • Coordinate with instructional and student development divisions on athletes' academic progress and qualifications
  • Participate in fund-raising efforts for the program
  • Prepare specific development training/conditioning programs for individual athletes and monitor their progress
  • Prepare and implement team travel arrangements
  • Prepare, collect, and disseminate information on the College basketball program to compliance organizations, administration, faculty, staff, and the general public while maintaining confidentiality of student athlete records
  • Participate in activities that contribute to the overall understanding of basketball coaching
  • Prepare and implement team travel arrangements along with submittal of travel expense reports upon return of trip

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Three years of basketball coaching experience
  •  Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona Driver's License, and the ability to demonstrate an acceptable driving record

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Aspects of sport science applicable to selection and preparation of athletes for a college basketball program
  • Principles and practices of supervision and motivation
  • Principles and practices of public relations
  • Principles and practices of fund-raising
  • Record keeping and general business practices required for the organization, management, promotion and planning  for a NJCAA basketball team
  • Observe and enforce rules, regulations, practices, and procedures of a NJCAA basketball program
  • Model leadership behavior and principles for other coaches and student athletes
  • Mentor and motivate students and monitor academic progress and eligibility
  • Interpret and use sport science as a developmental and preparation tool
  • Present clear training options to athletes and monitor progress towards agreed goals
  • Represent the College at public events and speak publicly in a professional role
  • Communicate effectively in interactions with coworkers, supervisors, students, and the general public sufficient to exchange or convey information in a professional manner
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with others in a diverse multicultural environment

Temporary employees who work twenty (20) or more hours per week for more than nineteen (19) weeks in a fiscal year are required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
