TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Happening today, Capitol
Hill is hosting another day of battles over gun control and an Arizona lawmaker
is right in the middle of it.
Today the Senate Judiciary
Committee takes on the proposed ban on assault weapons.
The junior senator Jeff Flake
has found himself on the front lines of the gun control battle, and today the
stakes get even higher.
This morning the Judiciary
Committee is expected to pick up debate on an assault weapons ban bill,
proposed by California Senator Dianne Feinstein. The measure is not expected to get any
support from committee Republicans, including Jeff Flake.
Some experts believe the
committee, which has a majority of Democrats, will pass it and then have it
amended on the Senate floor in the future.
Other measures are on the
docket today, including bills on universal background checks and school safety.
Last Thursday was the
first day of meetings, the committee passed stronger penalties for people who
illegally buy a gun for someone else.
What's called ‘straw purchasing' Senator Flake did not vote in
favor.
That hearing is scheduled
to start at 7 a.m. Tucson time.
