TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Have you filled our your 2012 tax return?  What about 2009?

The Internal Revenue Service says it owes more than $917 million to taxpayers across the country who haven't filled out a return for 2009.  However, you'll need to get that 2009 return in by April 15 to claim your refund.

The IRS is looking for 24,800 Arizonans who have a potential $20,742,000 worth of refunds. IRS managers say many people didn't file because they had too little income to require filing a tax return, even though they had taxes withheld from their wages or made quarterly estimated payments.  In those cases, most taxpayers have a three-year window of opportunity for claiming a refund.

If the 2009 refund money isn't claimed, it goes into the U.S. Treasury.

Current and prior year tax forms and instructions are available on the Forms and Publications page of IRS.gov or by calling toll-free800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676). Taxpayers who are missing Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 or5498 for 2009, 2010 or 2011 should request copies from their employer, bank or other payer.

If these efforts are unsuccessful, taxpayers can get a free transcript showing information from these year-end documents by filing Form 4506-T (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf),Request for Transcript of Tax Return, with the IRS or by calling 800-829-1040.
