The Mass was to give thanks that the world's Roman Catholics have a new pope.
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
A Mass of Thanksgiving was held today at St. Augustine Cathedral in honor of newly-elected Pope Francis.
Diocese of Tucson Bishop Gerald Kicanas led the Mass to give thanks that the world's one billion Roman Catholics have a new pope.
Today is also the 302nd anniversary of the death of Father Eusebio Kino, the founding father of San Xavier, Tumacacori and 22 other missions in the southwest.
A Tucson group is working on making Father Kino a saint. They hope it will happen this year since Father Kino was a Jesuit, as is Pope Francis.
A Jesuit is part of an order of priests and brothers who take a vow of poverty, chastity and obedience.
