There are two Major League Spring Training games at Kino Stadium this week.
The Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres game on Sunday, March 17 and the charity game between the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, March 21 to benefit the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation. Crowds are expected to exceed 10,000 per game.
Tickets still remain for both contest. Tickets are available at the Tucson Padres ticket office at Kino Stadium and by calling (520) 434-1367 or by visiting www.tucsonpadres.com.
In honor of St. Patrick's Day on Sunday, the concession stands will include green beer and green lemon lime Eegee's. Both the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres players will wear green caps. The weather forecast for both Spring Training games predicts sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s. Fans should plan on bringing sunscreen to the ballpark.
Both games start at 1:05 pm with gates opening at 11:00 am. Fans are encouraged to leave early to avoid pre-game traffic entering the parking lot.
Both teams are playing split-squad games in the Valley as well on Sunday. The Padres indicated that former Arizona Wildcats catcher Nick Hundley likely will remain with the group Sunday playing in Peoria thus not making the trek to Tucson.
Hundley (UA '05) is batting .469 this spring as he tries to recover from a down season in 2012 that saw him hit a career-low .157, get sent to the minor leagues and then to the disabled list with a season-ending knee injury.
He is expected to start the season as San Diego main catcher due to the fact that Yasmani Grandal will be suspended for the first 50 games for a violation of the Major League Baseball Drug policy.
Both Grandal and Hundley played in Tucson in 2012.
The Diamondback are scheduled to start Patrick Corbin on the mound, one of the contenders for the 5th and final spot in manager Kirk Gibson's rotation.
