Tucsonans march to end deportations

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Around 300 people of people march through the streets of Tucson in response to what they call heightened attacks on Tucsonans. The march for justice and dignity had people rallying to demand an end to mass deportation.

Demonstrators against SB 1070 took their message to the streets, calling for humane immigration reform for the 11 million undocumented people in our country.

"That's what we're here fighting for, so that police and border patrol stop the collaboration and stop separating our families," said Flor Burrel.

They rallied in front of Tucson Police Headquarters saying they want police to stop verifying people's citizenship with Border Patrol.

While police weren't ready to comment Sunday, we know TPD verifies the citizenship of those arrested on misdemeanor and felony charges and anyone who they suspect is an illegal immigrant.

"The border is just an imaginary line on the sand," said David Morales. "It's always changing, always going back and forth but right now there's people dying out in the desert."

Tucson Protection Networks Coalition is one of several organizations who organized the one mile march that started at the Southside Presbyterian Church.

Many demonstrators wore red to symbolize the American dream. Some women wore chicken wire and handcuffs to represent a lack of freedom.

"We're humans and we come to this country seeking a better future," said Enrique Macias.

The rally ended after three hours. It remained peaceful and no arrests were made.
