Ex-UA golfer Purdy wins in Mexico City

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Former University of Arizona golfer Ted Purdy won the Mexican Open tournament Sunday in Mexico City.

The tournament was the first of the season on the PGA Tour's Latinoamérica circuit.

Purdy, who played at the UA in the 1990s and was inducted into the school's sports Hall of Fame in 2005, shot a final-round 70 to win by one shot over David Vanegas.

The victory was Purdy's first professional victory in eight years. He won $35,000.

The 39-year-old Purdy won four times on the PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour, including the 2005 Byron Nelson Classic.
