West Chester residents got the chance to sound off on Monday about the proposed building of a Kroger in their neighborhood.
Silverman & Company, a developer based in Blue Ash, wants to build a shopping center that would feature a 130,000-square-foot Kroger Marketplace.
It would be located at the corner of Tylersville Road and State Route 747, which is currently a cornfield. However, in order to build the shopping center, a change in the zoning of the land is needed.
The developer argues the shopping center and Kroger Marketplace will benefit the community, while some residents who oppose say it could bring more noise, traffic and safety concerns to the area.
Marsha Erickson says she and many of her neighbors along Wethersfield Drive are against the proposed idea because a shopping center taking up over 35 acres of land will only add to nearby congestion on the roads.
"That's just going to increase traffic like crazy, which makes it very dangerous for the kids in the area, and the joggers, and people walking their dogs," said Erickson.
Currently, the land is zoned for community mixed use or residential transition. In order to move a shopping center in, the developer needs to get the zoning changed to commercial planned unit development.
"A lot of the folks here really want to support Kroger and the brand, but they're not giving us a whole lot to hold onto in terms of their support for the neighborhood," said Challis Hodge, West Chester resident.
Hodge was instrumental in starting a Facebook page against this new Kroger Marketplace.
"We moved in believing that the way this neighborhood existed would continue to be the case, and we'd be protected from this type of thing," said Hodge.
FOX19 reached out to Tim Burgoyne, an executive with Silverman & Company, and he said in a statement:
We're looking forward to this opportunity and excited about what this shopping center could do for the development of the surrounding area.
The Zoning Commission will ultimately send its recommendation to the West Chester Board of Trustees, who will make the final decision.
If the plan is approved, the Kroger would likely be completed in early 2014.
