3 students charged with rape of special needs student

(WMC-TV) – A special needs student was reportedly raped in a West Memphis High School bathroom. Now, three students are facing charges.

West Memphis police got the report of the rape inside West Memphis High last month. It is just now coming to light with the details revealed Monday.

The students arrested are ages 15 and 17.  They are charged with battery and first degree rape of a 16-year-old special needs student.

Investigators say the three suspects were skipping class in the bathroom. When the victim walked in, the suspects tried to rob him, made fun of him, and started beating him.  The victim ended up with two broken ribs.

The victim told police one of the suspects raped him in the bathroom. He said he told the principal and was sent back to class and was told it would be handled the next day.  The victim's aunt called police when she learned of the incident from her nephew.

"I wouldn't want that to happen to any of my children," Marvin Woods said. "That's a bad situation."

West Memphis police reports indicate the three suspects gave different stories about what happened. All of them admitted skipping class and hanging out in the bathroom.  They are all charged as adults.

Barry Adams, who is a parent of a West Memphis High student, says he is shocked something like that could happen at the school.

"My son goes to West Memphis High, and I have a lot of faith they will do the right thing," Adams said.

All three suspects are out on bond and have a court date scheduled for next month.

Investigators say the teenage suspects are no longer attending West Memphis High. They are at an alternative school. There was no comment from the school because it is Spring Break.
