UA hopes app will keep drivers safe during dust storms

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

University of Arizona developers say their Dust Storm app for iPhones could save lives.

It's free to download on iTunes and gives dust-storm alerts along with safety tips. The app also provides a place to store emergency and insurance policy numbers drivers may need.

Developers say a version for Android phones will be available in the next month or so. They hope the app reduces crashes and most importantly deaths.

A report by the Arizona Department of Transportation shows about 193 crashes occurred during dust storms in 2011 resulting in two deaths and 140 injuries.

We generally can start seeing dust storms in the spring.  When dangerous weather comes through, our Tucson News Now weather app is a great resource.

It is free. Just search for "TucsonNewsNow" in your app store.
