TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A 4-year-old boy is in critical condition and his mother and her boyfriend are in jail, arrested Thursday on suspicion of child abuse.

Judy Minley, 26, and James Dwight Robinson, 27, were booked into the Pima County Jail, each facing one count of child abuse.

According to a news release from the Tucson Police Department, the incident began as a reported near drowning at an apartment in the 5400 block of East Williams.

Emergency personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the call just before 11 a.m. and found Minley's 4-year-old son unconscious and unresponsive.

Police say the boy was revived during transport to a local trauma center, and paramedics noticed severe bruising on various parts of the child's body. According to the release, the medical personnel suspected that the bruising was non-accidental trauma and notified the police, who investigated the reported near drowning and the signs of trauma on the child.

The release says detectives investigating the case learned that Minley and Robinson allegedly disciplined the boy over several hours before putting him to bed on Wednesday night.

On Thursday morning, he was found unresponsive, the release said.

Police say there was no indication that the boy had actually been under water or nearly drowned as was originally reported.
