AZ Cardinals make "best day ever" for pediatric patients

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Pediatric patients at the Diamond Children's outpatient clinics got a big surprise Wednesday with a visit from the Arizona Cardinals.

Cardinals players Justin Bethel, Jamell Fleming, two cheerleaders, mascot "Big Red" and therapy dog Barney visited the children at the pediatric hematology-oncology clinic, Arizona Elks Clinic for Children and Young Adults and the PANDA Children's Aerodigestive Disorders Center at Wilmot.

Dana Morgan is a patient in the UAMC pediatric hematology-oncology outpatient clinic, who described the visit as the "best day ever!"

"Dana spends a lot of time at clinic and many of those visits make for very long and tiring days," said her mom, Michelle Morgan. "It was so wonderful to see her with a perpetual smile on a day she was undergoing general anesthesia and a lumbar puncture. The Cardinals' visit was great medicine."

The People Acting Now Discover Answers (PANDA) is the Phoenix Women's Board of the Steele Center, whose mission is to support research leading to improved treatments and cures for childhood diseases.

The UA Steele Children's Research Center organized the visit.

"Dana's favorite college team is the UA Wildcats, and the Arizona Cardinals is her favorite professional team," Morgan said. "Today's visit not only magnified her love for the Cardinals, it brought smiles and memories with what would otherwise have been an arduous day at the hospital. We're so grateful to the Cardinals for making today a very special one for our little girl."

The Forest Service said Tuesday’s high winds, coupled with dry vegetation and low relative humidity – is a formula that can create massive wildfires. Like the Aspen Fire on Mt Lemmon that burned 84,000 acres in 2003.
