AZ father delivers baby girl at home

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

There's usually a similar vision of how delivering a baby is supposed to happen. Usually the mother gets contractions, the father rushes her to the hospital, she goes into labor and a few hours later a baby is born. That's what the Jarman family of Surprise were expecting - but the reality was something different.

"This doesn't happen to people. This happens in movies," said Spencer Jarman as he held his newborn baby girl, Amelia Rose.

The 28-year-old was still in shock after he delivered his baby girl at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Spencer and Lizeth Jarman had taken a two-mile walk in the neighborhood and shortly after, the true contractions began to take place.

"She calls me in saying, 'My water broke,' and I said 'Oh, what do you mean?' I said, 'All right, lets go to the hospital.'"

But for baby Amelia Rose, the hospital wasn't close enough.

"I guess my motherly instinct came over me. I just have to do it. She is going to come out," recalled Lizeth Jarman from her hospital bed at Banner Del Webb in Surprise.

Five minutes after Lizeth Jarman's water broke, Amelia was making her way into the world.

Spencer Jarman remembers how he pulled her out.

"Next thing I know, the head is sticking out, and I grab her by the neck and wiggle her and pull her out," Spencer Jarman said.

Paramedics arrived two minutes after the delivery and checked out the baby. She and her mom are OK and were taken to the hospital for regular newborn checkups and vaccines.

The Jarman family is welcoming their second baby. The couple has an 18-month-old boy, Eli, who was happy kissing his little sister.

When CBS 5 News asked Spencer Jarman what it is like to have a daughter, he said with a laugh, "Stressful."

He added that there is now a bond he and Amelia will share for a lifetime.

"My sister told me if she ever gives you any lip, you can tell her, I dragged you into this world, I can drag you out," he said, adding yet another laugh.
