Public gets its first crack at PHX Sky Train

PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

The much-anticipated $1.58 billion PHX Sky Train opened for business Monday.

The free automated train connects the light-rail stop at 44th and Washington streets to the East Economy parking lot and then to Terminal 4 at Phoenix-Sky Harbor International Airport.

Until Monday, light-rail riders had to take a shuttle bus to Terminal 4.

By 2015, the Phoenix Sky Train will eventually connect all terminals and the rental car center near the Papago Freeway and 16th Street.

The public got its first crack on the automated inter-terminal train at noon Monday and many got silver tickets commemorating the event.

Trains will arrive and depart every three to four minutes and operate 24 hours a day and year-round at no charge.
