Sunnyside superintendent is sole San Antonio finalist

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Sunnyside Independent School District superintendent Manuel L. Isquierdo was named the sole finalist tonight for the superintendent's job in the San Antonio Independent School District.

The school district's trustees ended a nine-month search for a leader, picking the 62-year-old Isquierdo who was superintendent for Sunnyside since July 2007.

Texas law requires 1 21-day waiting period before Isquierdo can start working for the district.

San Antonio board chairman Ed Garza said the time will allow for contract and salary negotiations and allow the school district to introduce him to the community.

"The board unanimously felt that Dr. Isquierdo has the qualifications. In his previous position, he took a district known as the dropout factory of Arizona to [become rated] an acceptable district," Garza said.

"We were confident to name him a finalist but I think we all want to honor the public process. Tonight was, in our mind, the first part of a public process."

The Sunnyside district is the second-largest in Tucson.
