Fmr. booster club treasurer pleads guilty to embezzling

SPRINGBORO, OH (FOX19) -

Thomas Harves pleaded guilty Thursday to embezzling more than $400,000 from the Springboro Athletic Boosters Association.

Harves, 61, the former president and treasurer of the booster club, allegedly signed, endorsed and cashed over 300 unauthorized checks for his own personal benefit.

All told, prosecutors say almost $440,000 was stolen between 2004 and 2012.

Authorities say an investigation was conducted into the alleged misappropriation of funds from the association after current board members of the Springboro Boosters brought their concerns to police back in the spring of 2012.

The investigation also revealed that Harves made periodic payments back to the boosters, totaling nearly $282,000. This included a lump sum payment of 143,000 when he was reportedly confronted by board members in June 2012.

He was charged with one count of aggravated theft, a third degree felony.

Harves will be sentenced at a later date.
