Smoke that residents saw towering in southwest Valley skies was coming from a hay fire that erupted Wednesday morning.

Units were mobilized at 10:15 a.m. after the fire was reported at a dairy near Southern Avenue and Palo Verde Road, south of the Buckeye Municipal Airport.

There was no structural damage other than to the barn where the tightly rolled and compacted hay was stored, said Karen Alexander, a spokeswoman for the Buckeye Valley Fire District.

Alexander said the fire, which rekindled later in the day, was contained to an area of about 12,000 square feet.

The fire is likely to smolder for several days.
