SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

An assistant principal at Sycamore Junior High School has been indicted on drug charges.

Douglas Kennedy, 53, is facing five counts of deception to obtain a dangerous drug.

According to the indictment, between April and December of 2012, Kennedy obtained Oxycodone/Acetaminophen and Vicodin illegally.

The prosecutor's office confirmed that none of the drug related activity appeared to have taken place on school grounds, but several locals throughout the community were still shocked to hear the news.

"We're supposed to set examples to the school system and it's hard for me to handle a situation when you hear this," said Patrick Carnes.

Sycamore officials say Kennedy was placed on paid administrative leave once they learned of the investigation.

One parent, Lisa Kroeger, says a person with as much power as an assistant principal is setting a horrible example for the students.

"He could have meant everything to them, their idol or somebody they always look up to, they see every day," said Kroeger.

Local resident Patrick Carnes says he thinks the school should even consider expanding their D.A.R.E. program.

"Maybe they need to go a little deeper. Maybe it has to go to all of the employees, not just the students," added Carnes.

Kennedy was indicted on March 29. According to court documents, the incidents date back as far as April 2012.

He was released from jail on his own recognizance and is scheduled to be in court on April 12.

The school district says Kennedy's leave of absence will last until the case is resolved.
