Police: MAX stop robber cried, wrote apology letter

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A 20-year-old man tried to rob a MAX passenger of his laptop, but officers quickly tracked down the robber, arrested him and then watched him write an apology letter when they interviewed him, according to court documents.

Dylan Allen is accused of robbing the victim of his bag at the MAX platform at Northeast 60th Avenue on Tuesday.

The victim told police he was on the train when he noticed people looking at him as he worked on his laptop computer. Once he exited the train, the others followed him out, and he was soon confronted by Allen, court documents said.

Police said Allen held a knife to the victim's throat and said, "I'm going to cut your [expletive] throat," and "Give me the stuff in the bag."

Allen and the victim struggled over the bag, and then he eventually ran off, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Officers were able to quickly locate Allen and a female companion who Allen later said was an accomplice. In fact, he told police the woman was the "mastermind" of the robbery and that the police should have arrested her, too.

Allen, police said, "cried profusely" when interviewed by officers before he started to write the apology letter and then stopped writing.

Police said they were able to recover a knife matching the description of the one used in the robbery. They also said surveillance video matched the victim's description of what happened.

Allen was arraigned on one count of robbery Wednesday.
