Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn: Friday's practice "much better"

Posted: Updated:

Coach Gus Malzahn's Auburn Tigers held a two-hour practice Friday morning at the Auburn Athletics Complex practice fields, their ninth workout of the spring.

"Practice was much better today than Wednesday," offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee saida after practice. "The energy was better, the competition – we got better today.

"Nine practices in, they understand what we want as far as the tempo. Now we've got to execute. It's one thing to play fast, but you've got to play fast and play smart. That's the consistency we need. That's why we're practicing.

"We've got to have some players and some vocal leaders who pull everybody together; it can't always be the coaches. That's when you become really good as a team."

"All things combined, we had a good day of practice today. We're introducing some packages, so there were some mental errors, but the attitude and the effort and the intensity of practice were good," defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson said following the workout.

"There's still a lot of good competition going on for jobs. A lot of guys are in the picture for the depth chart. The biggest thing Saturday's scrimmage will give us is finding out about those guys who can handle the game situation as opposed to being just a great drill player."

Auburn will hold an officiated scrimmage session Saturday morning at Jordan-Hare Stadium, its final practice in the stadium before A-Day on Saturday, April 20, scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT kickoff.

Dylan Thompson threw for three touchdowns and No. 24 South Carolina's maligned defense stood strong on a fourth-quarter goal line stand to topple No. 6 Georgia 38-35 on Saturday night.
No. 24 South Carolina's defense showed it's not nearly as bad as it looked two weeks ago - and maybe that No. 6 Georgia isn't the runaway favorite in the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division.

Georgia can establish itself as a top-tier beast if it gets by South Carolina this weekend - and USC would drop to 0-2 in the league with a loss. Tennessee travels to Oklahoma, where Coach Bob Stoops doesn't believe the SEC is all-powerful.
