TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Country music star Toby Keith made an appearance at a bar & grill in Tucson named after him.

Giddy fans snapped pictures and shook hands with the superstar. But one young man got an even bigger surprise.

"He was about to walk right past us, when he saw our little homemade sign that said I was going to the Navy, he turned right around and walked right back over to me," said Nick Matulin.

It was Matulin's lucky day. His musical idol autographed his guitar.

"I was just speechless," he said.

For the last decade, the patriotic musician has visited our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. He says he can't thank them enough.

"Our military is never quite out of harm's way, you pray for peace every night," Keith said.

Saturday's appearance came as a surprise to some mall-goers. Around 300 people came to watch the country music star perform live at the restaurant's late grand opening.

Keith was at the restaurant for a couple of hours before heading up to Country Thunder in Florence for a scheduled concert.

He's no stranger to Tucson and says it reminds him of home. "It's just like the people here. They have the same type of lifestyle that we have in Oklahoma," said Keith.
