Taxpayers can still get an extension, tips on how

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

If your taxes haven't made it into the mailbox yet, time is running out.

Taxpayers are encouraged to head out to the post office early today to avoid the lines.  Remember taxes must be postmarked by midnight, tonight.

According to tax experts for those who can't file their taxes today, their best bet is to file for an extension.  It is easy to do so.  Taxpayers can get the form right off the IRS website, www.irs.gov or by clicking on the following link http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc304.html, which will give taxpayers further directions on how to file an extension.

Those filing for an extension, be aware, it pushes the deadline for filing to October 15, but does not mean more time to pay if they owe the IRS money.

Tax experts say the number one reason people don't file on time is because they can't afford to pay their taxes.  Those who can't pay should first file and then apply for a payment installment plan if that is the case.  Before applying for a payment plan, remember the plan does include interest.

Whatever the situation, the Cherrybell office is the only post office that will let you mail your returns as late as midnight; the Cherrybell station is located off 22nd Street and Cherrybell Stravenue.  The lobby has a self service 'ship and mail' center.
