Chesley fails to resign after UC Trustee request

Stan Chesley Stan Chesley
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees wrote a letter to local attorney Stan Chesley, asking for his voluntary resignation from the board in order to "preserve the integrity of the University."

The request came after Chesley was disbarred in Kentucky last month over his actions and decisions in a settlement involving the diet drug fen-phen.

The letter referenced the Kentucky Supreme Court case findings that Chesley "engaged in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation."

Seven fellow trustees signed the letter, excluding Geraldine "Ginger" Warner, citing Chesley's "disregard" of the University's code of conduct.

Subsection A of the code of conduct states, "As members of the University of Cincinnati community, members of the board of trustees are responsible for maintaining the highest ethical standards of this institution, and of the broader community in which we function."

While board members recognized  Chesley's service to the University, they stated his service could not "overcome the serious breach" of Chesley's "ethical obligations".

The Board gave Chesley until 5 p.m. on Monday to resign.

Chesley reportedly did not submit a letter of resignation by this time. As a result, they plan to hold a special public meeting to consider a formal resolution regarding Chesley's continued service on the board.

The meeting is planned for April 18 at 9 a.m.

According to the University's website, Chesley is a 1960 graduate of UC's College of Law. Chesley served on the Board of Trustees from February 1985 through January of 1994. His current term began in 2009 and was slated to run until 2018.
