Gilbert runner crossed finish line minutes before blast

GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

In all, there were 259 runners from Arizona participating in the Boston Marathon. Frederick Heinemann of Gilbert crossed the finish line less than five minutes before the explosion.

"I was going through the shoot and getting my medal.  I heard one explosion and then a second," said Heinemann.

He told CBS 5 the moments after the blast were very confusing. Although Heinemann was only blocks away he said there were so many people he couldn't see what had happened.

"I thought it was something odd but nobody around me was panicking. We walked down the street and somebody had a car radio on and the doors open and we were just listening, thinking, 'oh my God how could that happen,'" said Heinemann.

Heinemann eventually found his friend who had crossed the finish line right behind him.

"He came through and found the rest of us and he was crying, saying that it was bombs that went off. He wasn't hurt. Luckily he decided to sprint the last part of it so he crossed the finish line right as the bombs went off but he turned around and saw the explosion," said Heinemann.

Heinemann said his sister was also running in the race.  She never finished.  Instead she and all of the other runners still on the course after the blast were diverted away from the finish line around mile marker 25.
