PCC Baseball falls short to Yavapai

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College baseball team (22-26-1, 12-20 in conference) dropped two tough games to Yavapai College on Thursday at the West Campus.

Yavapai got to pitcher Scotty Watson (Empire HS) in the 1st inning scoring five runs in Pima's 11-2 loss in the first game. Watson took the loss and dropped to 2-5 on the year. The Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning as Sergio Ortiz (Sunnyside HS) drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a Zach Schira (Marcos de Niza HS) RBI single. Schira finished the game 1 for 2 with an RBI and two walks. In the 6th inning, Luis Robles (Flowing Wells HS) hit an RBI single to score Alec Beyersdorf (Catalina Foothills HS), who had drawn a leadoff walk.

In the second game, the late innings hurt the Aztecs as Yavapai scored five runs in the 8th and two runs in the 9th to take the lead in Pima's 14-12 loss. Jake Cole (Sahuaro HS) took the loss and dropped to 3-6 on the season.

The offense started off quick for the Aztecs as they scored five runs each in the 1st and 2nd innings. Juan Gamez (Cienega HS) hit a 2-run RBI double to give the Aztecs a 4-2 lead. Dyson and Jesus Arvizu (Palo Verde HS) had RBI singles in the inning as well. Gamez came right back and hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning. Bryant Muñoz (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a 2-run RBI single to make it 10-2.Yavapai cut Pima's lead to 10-7 but the Aztecs responded in the 6th inning. Arvizu had an RBI on a groundout that scored Schira and Cooper Smith (Canyon del Oro HS) hit an RBI single to score Gamez to make it 12-7.

Gamez finished the game 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Schira went 2 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Dyson was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Arvizu went 2 for 5 with two RBIs.

The Aztecs will play at Cochise College on Saturday in Douglas. The first game of the doubleheader will be at noon.
