Tucson man pleads guilty in a child abuse case

TUCSON, AZ (AP) -

A Tucson man accused of beating his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter has pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child abuse.

Pima County prosecutors say 30-year-old Oscar Aguirre entered into a plea agreement Monday.

He's scheduled to be sentenced June 3 and faces between five and 20 years in prison.

Authorities say Aguirre was caring for the toddler on Jan. 14, 2012, when he called 911 because she was having trouble breathing.

The girl was taken to the hospital and doctors reported finding a punctured lung, four broken ribs and injuries to her spleen and kidney.

The Arizona Daily Star says Aguirre was indicted on attempted second-degree murder and child abuse charges.

Had he gone to trial and been convicted, Aguirre could have faced up to 48 years in prison.
