COVINGTON, KENTUCKY (FOX19) -

Students at Holmes High School designed eight 'Service Learning Projects' to demonstrate what they've learned and give something back to the community.

The kids at Latonia Elementary are getting an outdoor classroom built, thanks to Brandon Wells and his fellow classmates.

"It gets me not only out of school, but get to show Latonia what all Holmes can do," explained Wells, Holmes senior.

Participants also helped out at Glenn O. Swing Elementary, giving the high school students valuable experience working with 3rd graders.

"It's a tough experience, but if I want to be a teacher, I got to handle it," said Maria Poellnitz, another Holmes senior.

The Holmes students even held a free car wash and fluid check.

"It is free, but all donations we receive will be used to provide transportation, bus passes for those in need," explained Ashley Mcclure, Holmes service learning coordinator.

Nearly 600 Holmes High School students took part in Thursday's day of service.
