Drexel Heights Fire District responded to a brush fire just before 6 p.m. this evening in the area south of Partridge and west of Mission. The 911 call came from a resident on Partridge who spotted the fire out a window.
Upon arrival, DHFD had a one acre brush fire burning. Initially, homes were an immediate concern but firefighters were able to stop flame spread to any buildings in the area.
The fire continued to burn in a southeast direction burning a total of nine acres before it was brought under control just before 8 p.m. The fire did spread onto the Tohono O'odham reservation.
At one point there were 12-foot high flames. This fire was extremely difficult to fight because of lack of roadway access and fire hydrants in this rural area.
DHFD had assistance from Green Valley FD, Northwest FD, Tohono Odham FD and the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
