Ohio officials warn of aging services scam

(FOX19) -

Ohio officials are warning older adults throughout the state of scammers impersonating aging services staff.

The Ohio Department of Aging issued a consumer alert after several incidents were reported in southern Ohio.

According to authorities, scammers impersonate staff of elder services in an attempt to get information or access to elders' homes. Residents should be aware of anyone showing up unannounced to their home, claiming to represent a local aging organization.

Tips to avoid becoming a victim:

  • Do not allow anyone into your home who shows up unexpectedly. Any representative of an area agency will schedule a home visit in advance.
  • Ask for an ID and call 1 (866) 243-5678 to be connected to your local agency and verify the individual. Representatives are required to carry a badge or other documents.
  • If asked to complete or sign forms, insist that you review them and mail them in later.
  • Scammers may also try to call consumers. Representatives of an area agency on aging will always provide an employee name and call-back number.

Authorities say scammers have claimed to represent any of these organizations: area agency on aging, council on aging, office of aging PASSPORT or others with similar titles.

Anyone who feels they may have been a target should contact local law enforcement.
