The 2nd seeded Tucson Badgers took another step closer to a Division I State Baseball Championship Thursday when they beat defending champion and #10 seed Scottsdale Chaparral 6-1 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Badgers (28-4-1) didn't have a hit in the first four innings, and to make matters worse they couldn't take advantage of seven walks and a hit batter given to them by Firebirds starter Andrew Shaps.
But the bats came alive in the 5th as TMHS scored five runs on five hits to take control of the game.
With the game tied 1-1, Senior captain Alex Robles smacked a single up the middle to score Issac Federico and put Tucson ahead for good. Felipe Peralta followed that with a two-run double down the right field line.
Senior lefty Ryan Norrix did the rest as he held the Firebirds to one run on five hits in a complete game win.
The Badgers face 14th seed Phoenix Mountain Pointe at 4 p.m. Saturday at Tempe Diablo Stadium in a winner's bracket semifinal.
