TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A San Diego man, who police say killed a Tucson woman in 1976 has been arrested and is awaiting extradition to Tucson.

Bruce McCullough, 66, was 28 in 1976 when police say he allegedly killed 20-year-old Donna Smith. Smith was found on March 19, 1976 in her home in the 1000 block of East Mossman Drive, near South Park Avenue and East Bilby Road.

McCullough was arrested in San Diego and charged with one count of first degree murder. He was booked into the San Diego Jail.

Police investigating the case in 1976 identified McCullough as the suspect, but could not locate him.

The case was eventually classified as a cold case and was reviewed periodically.

In January, detectives got a break in the case regarding the possible location of McCullough in California.

With help from the San Diego Police Department, McCullough was located at his residence in the San Diego area on May 2.

McCullough had assumed a false identity and only recently began using his real name again.

Smith's mother still lives in Arizona and has been notified of the arrest.
