El Rio Birth & Women's Health Center has hit a milestone.
Sunday, two babies were born at the same time with midwives attending.
One was born at the Birth Center.
The other was born at Tucson Medical Center.
The babies tied as the 10,000th baby born with the help of the center's midwives.
The center had humble beginnings.
Two midwives started it in a house in Tucson in 1982.
Now it is the only free-standing birth center in Tucson.
It's also the only one that offers water birth with a midwife.
El Rio's birth center also has won the designation of Baby-Friendly from Baby-Friendly USA, an organization that promotes breastfeeding.
The center met strict criteria regarding education, training and support of women who wish to breastfeed their babies.
El Rio is the first birth center in Arizona to be awarded the designation.
There are only about 160 hospitals and birth centers in the country that have won this recognition.
