TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Ironwood Ridge pitcher Emily Robinson says it was the best game she's ever pitched.
The junior shutout out defending Division II champion Canyon del Oro 4-0 on three hits in an Elimination Semifinal to push the Nighthawks one step closer to a berth in the state championship game.
IRHS (27-10) will face Phoenix Greenway in the Elimination Final on Friday at the Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix with the winner getting a date in the Championship game with Peoria Sunrise Mountain.
The 7th seeded Demons (23-8-1) lost to The Mustangs 2-0 Thursday night up in Phoenix. Ironwood Ridge and Greenway have not faced each other this season.
Ironwood Ridge broke a scoreless tie in the 4th when shortstop Alex Rapp after Dorados third sacker Heather Knight fumbled a Crista Braunreiter bunt and then throw it down the right field line.
It got worse for Knight later in the inning when a hard grounder off the bat of Robin Porter ricocheted off her glove, hit her in the face and caromed into foul territory. A run scored on the play to give the Nighthawks a 2-0 lead. Knight would leave the game.
Ironwood Ridge loaded the bases in the 6th and scored one on an RBI bunt single by Merilee Miller. Alex Clinton than drew a walk on losing pitcher Alexis Alonfso to force home the Nighthawks fourth run.
That was more than enough for Robinson who struck out three.
