Firefighters aim to keep hikers safe

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Northwest Fire Department is starting to see incidents on hiking trails.  So far they've responded to three injured or dehydrated hikers.

Firefighters say last year was a difficult one with two hiker fatalities in Pima County, both women were visiting from out of state. Last year firefighters also responded to over a dozen calls for injured and lost hikers.

That's why it's crucial to keep a few things in mind.

"It's a lot preparation from understanding the trailhead, making sure your body is in a good state combined with bringing lots of water, a charged cell phone, and proper clothing," NFD Capt. Adam Goldberg said.

Goldberg also said it is not a good idea to plan a hiking trip at the last minute.  The best idea is to plan the trip a couple days in advance if you can or at least a day before.
