PD: Car ran red light, hit Phoenix cop

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix police officer is recovering after being hit in his squad car Thursday, according to authorities.

Phoenix Police Department spokesman Tommy Thompson said a vehicle ran a red light at 43rd Avenue and Sweetwater and T-boned the officer's vehicle about 9:30 a.m.

When emergency crews arrived, the officer was trapped in his car. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

His name has not been released.

The vehicle that ran the red light was a black Honda Accord driven by an elderly couple with a Wisconsin license plate.

No other details were immediately available.
