The Valdosta State Lady Blazers need only two more wins to return to the Softball National Championships.
They'll attempt to earn those wins right at home, where they are 23-3 this season.
VSU hosts conference foe Alabama Huntsville in this week's NCAA Super Regionals, a team they know all too well from the Gulf South Conference.
"We just got through playing them in the conference tournament two weeks ago, and now we have to play them again in the Super Regional," says Lady Blazers Head Coach Thomas Macera. "We know each other pretty well, and they're very very good and we're good. It's just going to be two tough days."
The Lady Blazers went 2-2 against the Chargers this season, but never played them at home due to a rainout.
This weekend though, the team knows they're in for a challenge to defend their national title, but are glad they get to do it at home in front of their fans.
"There'll be a thousand people here tomorrow. Our home fans are the best around. There's no better fans. They come out and cheer hard. They come out early. It's a great atmosphere for these girls to play under," says Macera. "It's intimidating for a lot of schools to come play here with the fans we have because you don't see that everywhere."
First pitch in the best of three series is at 6:00 Friday night. Game 2 begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, with a possible Game 3 scheduled for 3:30.
