COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A volunteer member of a search-and-rescue team put his skills to use when an exercise turned into a real rescue.

It happened last Saturday on the Salt River, east of Scottsdale.  The Cochise County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team was conducting swift water training around 1 p.m. when a coordinator and volunteer saw a young girl, about six years old, slip into the water.

The girl's nine-year-old brother dove into the water after her.  He was unable to get her out, but he was able to get himself out of the current.  That's when rescue volunteer Eric Brooks dove in and grabbed the girl just as she was being pulled under by the strong current, and he was able to get her safely to shore.

Both children were OK.  Cochise County officials said neither of them were wearing life vests.

The team continued their training for the remainder of the day.

Eric Brooks will be recommended to receive the "life saving" award from the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.

The more times you take to the trails at Sabino Canyon, the more likely you are to come across wildlife. "I'm out here every day," said Ben Markwart, who was running through the area on Wednesday. Markwart isn't a stranger to Sabino Canyon.  His friend Kevin Cross joined him on Wednesday. Cross frequents the area a few times a week.
