Tornadoes hit 5 states; 2 dead

(RNN) -  An estimated 26 tornadoes struck Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, and Illinois on Sunday, with another touching down in Missouri early Monday morning.

The damage claimed the life of at least two people and injured 21.

Glen Irish, 79, and Billy Hutchinson, 76, both from Shawnee, were found dead after a tornado leveled a central Oklahoma mobile home park, according to the Associated Press. 

Two people from that same county were reported missing, but they have since been found and authorities said they were not at home when the tornado hit, according to CNN.

After several tornadoes touched down in four states throughout the day Sunday, the tornado spree continued when another touched down in Golden City, MO before 2:00 a.m. EST.

The area of Pottawatomie County, OK, where Shawnee is located, saw two large tornadoes touched down, causing severe damage to homes and businesses and flipping a semi truck on Interstate 40.

Search and rescue operations are underway and reports of more deaths and injuries are possible in the area located 35 miles southeast of Oklahoma City.

Homes and businesses were damaged in Wichita, KS, and outside of Oklahoma City.

Areas north of Des Moines, IA, were hit by a tornado leaving thousands of homes without power, according to the Des Moines Register.

Hail pelted Wichita, KS, as the severe weather moved through earlier on Sunday. Large hail was reported as far north as Minnesota and south to Texas.

The outbreak happened just three days before the second anniversary of the fatal, F5 tornado that  smashed Joplin, MO on May 22, 2011.

For days, the National Weather Service forecasted severe weather for Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa, including the possibility of "intense tornadoes." High winds in the upper atmosphere continue, meaning the threat of severe weather and tornadoes will continue in the same area Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm outbreak comes four days after 16 tornadoes touched down in north Texas, killing six people and destroying Granbury, TX.
